Here’s the real secret…

A beautiful hidden spring high in the Whakarewarewa Forest supplies our fresh spring water to our tubs. It is so crystal clear after spending a hundred years filtering through the volcanic aquifers beneath the forest.

The water has a wonderful mineral balance, with neutral pH, perfect for tired bodies to soak in.

To keep it pure and natural we use electronic oxidising, silver and copper ionising, and ultrasonic processes (Enviroswim technology) to ensure purity and safety, rather than a chemical-based approach. This meets the New Zealand Standard for Pool Water Quality NZS 5826:2010, and means that there is no skin or eye irritation typical of a chlorine-based system. It is also kind on the environment and allows us to use the water leaving the tubs to irrigate the pongas and ferns on the site.

As an added bonus, because the water is not geothermal, you will emerge from your soak fresh and smelling of cedar – no sulphur smell on your swimwear or skin! Each tub is filled with fresh water when you arrive, and freshly filtered water is continually replenishing your tub during your soak. Only freshly filtered water ever flows into your tub (water does not flow from other tubs to your tub).

Water temperature is set according to the day, usually the tubs bubble away at a nice 38 to 40oC, or a bit cooler on hot days. If feeling overheated, refresh yourself with a complimentary ladle of cool water.

We have designed and operate a best-in-class filtration, treatment and cleaning system to make sure that each soak you have is in your own freshly filled tub of filtered spring water.

A freshly drawn tub of filtered water awaits each visitor

Water in each individual tub is continuously replenished with fresh filtered water during your soak, with the entire tub completely changed during the course of your soak. The water is “your” water – water does not flow from tub to tub.

Non-chemical water treatment

Environmentally friendly (and bather-friendly) technology is used to filter and treat the water to NZ Pool Water Quality Standards, without relying on nasty chemicals. Using sand filters, electronic oxidising, ionising, and ultrasonic processes (Enviroswim technology) delivers safe, pure water with no skin or eye irritation typical of chlorine-based systems.

A clean fresh tub every visit

Our best-in-class cleaning systems assure you of the highest levels of hygiene. Tubs are freshly filled for your soak and water continuously replenished during your visit. Tubs are inspected by staff before each visit and individually cleaned daily or as required. In addition, we electronically monitor the quality of the water continuously to ensure delivery of safe, pure water to each tub. The water is filtered through a sand filter and the Enviroswim ultrasonic unit. We also undertake daily manual water testing to back up the electronic system, and regularly complete a comprehensive microbiological test. The shared changing facilities are also cleaned on the hour or approximately 13 times each day. We also encourage those of you fresh off a mountain bike ride to have a shower before hopping into the hot tub.

Environmentally friendly

Because our treatment system is not chemical-based, it is friendly on the environment, allowing us to recycle the water through irrigation for our ferns and pongas.
