A Forest Weekend in Rotorua: Your Guide to a Waipa Getaway
Sometimes you don’t need a big itinerary or a long road trip to feel like you’ve properly escaped. Just a couple of days, a campervan, a forest and enough time to slow down.
If you’ve got a weekend up your sleeve, Rotorua’s Waipa area makes a pretty special base for a forest getaway. With mountain bike trails, walking tracks, good food and plenty of opportunities to soak tired legs, you can pack a lot into two days without feeling like you’re rushing from one thing to the next.

Arrive and settle into the forest
Make your way to Rotorua in a Wilderness motorhome, your home on wheels for the weekend. Their range of motorhomes gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace, with comfortable living spaces that make it easy to slow down between adventures.
For your Rotorua forest escape, park up at Waipa Forest Camp, a dedicated area for self-contained campervans right beside Whakarewarewa Forest. Simply pull up, check in and you’re already at the doorstep of one of Rotorua’s most iconic outdoor playgrounds.
Then it’s time to get out and explore.

Get lost in the forest
If two wheels are your thing, head over to Mountain Bike Rotorua at the Waipa MTB Carpark. You can hire a bike, grab some trail advice and head straight into Whakarewarewa Forest.
For a proper day out, take on the Whakarewarewa Forest Loop, one of New Zealand’s Ngā Haerenga Great Rides. The 33km loop winds through towering Californian redwoods, native forest and working plantation, with geothermal landscapes, volcanic terrain and beautiful views across Rotorua’s lakes along the way. It’s mostly Grade 2, with a couple of Grade 3 sections, and takes around 3-5 hours depending on your pace and how often you stop to take it all in.
Not feeling quite that energetic? No problem. Pack a picnic and spend a few hours wandering one of the forest’s shorter walking tracks instead. There’s something pretty satisfying about leaving the phone in the campervan, finding a quiet spot beneath the trees and letting the afternoon unfold.

Dinner, then switch off
After a day outside, you don’t need to go far for dinner. Head across the carpark to Secret Spot Hot Tubs and settle in at BaseCamp Street Food Kitchen for smash burgers, loaded fries and something refreshing.
Then it’s time to properly get lost in the moment.
Book a private forest hot tub experience and settle into 45 minutes of warm forest bathing, surrounded by native ferns and the sounds of the forest. Each private cedar hot tub is filled with fresh spring water and your experience also includes access to the cold plunge tubs and complimentary Shinny Dip foot hot tubs.
As the evening gets darker, the forest takes on a whole different feel. This is the part where you stop checking the time, sit back and let the weekend unfold.

Wake up slowly – this is a forest weekend in Rotorua after all!
The beauty of travelling by motorhome is that tomorrow morning doesn’t have to start with an alarm.
Make a coffee, open the doors and take your time. Your Wilderness camper gives you a comfortable place to recharge before heading out for another day of exploring.
When you’re ready, wander across to Secret Spot for a manuka-roasted coffee and a complimentary Shinny Dip foot hot tub. They’re designed for tired legs, so they make a pretty good post-adventure morning ritual.
If yesterday’s ride is making itself known, take things up a notch with a private sauna and cold plunge experience. Spend 40 minutes in a traditional Japanese hinoki wood sauna before cooling off in the 12°C cold plunge tubs. It’s a simple hot-and-cold ritual and a great way to ease into the day.

One last walk before you go
Before you hit the road, grab a paper map and squeeze in one last little adventure.
The Trig Loop is a roughly one-hour walk through the forest, with the track climbing towards the Whaka Lookout and opening up to beautiful views across Rotorua. It’s the perfect final wander before you pack up the campervan and get back on the road.
That’s the beauty of a forest getaway in Rotorua. You don’t need a packed itinerary or weeks away from home. A couple of days, a comfortable place to sleep and a forest full of things to explore can be enough to help you properly switch off.
So grab your adventure buddy, block off a weekend, and find a road worth wandering down.
