The Whakarewarewa Forest Loop is one of Rotorua’s most iconic outdoor experiences. This loop offers a mix of towering redwoods, flowing trails, and hidden scenic gems. Here are 10 things to know before you go.

FOREST LOOP TRAIL | Ride Rotorua Limited

1. What is the Forest Loop?

The Whakarewarewa Forest Loop is a 33–35km circular trail that winds through the famous Redwoods/Whakarewarewa Forest just outside Rotorua. It’s mostly ridden clockwise and offers a mix of smooth trails and some more technical sections.

2. It is Rotorua’s “Great Ride”

The Forest Loop is part of New Zealand’s Ngā Haerenga Great Rides network. It’s designed to showcase the region’s best scenery, and is typically completed in 3–5 hours depending on your pace.

3. The forest itself is the highlight

The towering Californian redwoods create a calm, almost magical atmosphere for a portion of the ride. The pumice-based trails drain well, making it a great ride year-round.

4. Best place to start

Most people begin at the Waipa Mountain Bike Carpark, which has toilets, showers, bike hire, and food options. It’s well signposted and easy to navigate.

5. Coffee stops you shouldn’t miss

Before or after your ride, great coffee is part of the experience. Popular stops include Eastwood Café and The Wheelhouse Café.

6. Don’t miss the lake views

One of the standout sections of the loop takes you near Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake), with access to viewpoints overlooking both the Blue Lake and the sacred Green Lake (Rotokakahi).

7. The best photo spots

Highlights on the Forest Loop include cycling through the redwood groves, ridge sections with wider views, Blue Lake lookout, and quiet forest corners filled with ferns. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best light.

8. Great rest and picnic spots

There are several places to pause on the Forest Loop including picnic areas within the forest, Blue Lake beaches, and scenic clearings along the trail.

9. It’s suitable for most riders

The trail is mostly Grade 2 with some short Grade 3 sections, making it achievable for beginners with some confidence while still enjoyable for experienced riders. You can also shorten or adapt your route using the wider trail network.

10. Finish with a soak at Secret Spot

After a few hours in the saddle, slipping into a cedar hot tub or private sauna surrounded by forest is hard to beat. It’s a uniquely Rotorua way to finish the experience and gives your legs the reset they deserve.

The Whakarewarewa Forest Loop is more than just a ride. It’s a full Rotorua experience, blending nature, adventure, and relaxation. From coffee stops to lake views and forest bathing, it’s the kind of experience you’ll want to do again.
